Madhubani paintings were traditionally done on freshly plastered mud walls and floors of huts.  In order to promote the art they are also done on cloth and handmade paper. However they remain confined to a small geographical area and the skills have been passed on through centuries. The style of using two dimensional imagery depicting men, nature, events, object such as the sun and the moon have largely remained the same.

Madhubani paintings are typically made from the paste of powdered rice, the colors are derived from plants and ochre and lampblack are used for reddish brown and black tones.

Where It Was Made

This form of artistary comes from the Northern region of India, specifically from the state of Bihar.  This art may also be found in the Mithila region of Nepal.

Who It Was Made By

Depending on the intricasy of the design, artists use their fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens and matchsticks to make these.  The paintings showns here have a lot of detail.  Traditionally this form of art was practiced by women in the region.  The paintings shown here are done by Saroj and Rekha who continue their ancestoral traditions.
